Bacteria
- Bacteria are tiny organisms found everywhere, including inside and on the human body.
- They are too small to be seen with the naked eye, only visible through a microscope.
- Bacteria are used in various processes, such as yogurt and sauerkraut production, waste treatment, and biofuel production.
- Some bacteria cause illness, while others spoil food.
- To thrive, bacteria need:
- A temperature between 20-37°C
- Moisture with a mineral content similar to 0.9% salt solution
- Organic matter for food
- Mostly oxygen
- A neutral pH (around 7)
- Food preservation methods to prevent bacterial growth include:
- Freezing at -20°C, though freezing can alter food consistency
- Refrigerating at +8°C
- Pickling (fermentation) using substances like vinegar (e.g. pickles)
- Drying (e.g., dried noodles, flour, sugar)
