Hazardous Materials Incident Response Levels

Level 1 Response

  • Small fires or leaks involving propane or natural gas with no injuries
  • Small spills of gasoline or oil (1-50 liters) not in sewers
  • Minor odors or fumes in residential areas with no injuries (excluding natural gas)
  • Special requests by police, such as pepper spray
  • Abandoned containers (one only, not leaking, no injuries)
  • Odors or fumes in non-residential areas with no injuries (excluding natural gas)

Response Dispatch

  • One Pumper class apparatus dispatched for Level 1 response
  • Chemical/Biological/Radiological/Nuclear/Explosive (CBRNE) Level 1 response includes:
    • Hazardous Materials Level 1 response
    • Hazardous Materials Unit (Heavy Haz)
    • District Chief

Level 2 Response

  • Small fires or leaks involving propane with injuries
  • Odors or fumes in residential areas with injuries (excluding natural gas)
  • Gasoline or oil spills:
    • Inside spills
    • Minor spills (1-50 liters) in sewers
    • Medium spills (50-200 liters) with no injuries
