Harsha's Life and Reign
- Harsha, also known as Harshavardhana, ruled northern India from around 606 to 647 CE.
- He became king at the age of 16 after his older brother was killed.
- He formed an alliance with another king and fought against those who had harmed his family.
Expansion of Empire
- Harsha led a big army and fought for about six years, gaining control over several parts of India.
- His empire included modern-day Uttar Pradesh, parts of Punjab, and Rajasthan.
Administration of Empire
- Harsha administered his empire in a similar manner as the Guptas, but with a more feudal system.
- Every feudal chief had to contribute a certain number of foot soldiers, horses, etc. to help the king build a powerful army.
Conquests and Defeats
- Harsha was successful in conquering parts of eastern India.
- He was not successful in conquering areas to the south of River Narmada.
- His reign came to an end after he was defeated by Pulakeshin II of the Chalukya Dynasty.
