Handgun Qualification
- The handgun qualification is a pass/fail test that evaluates the recruit's proficiency with a handgun.
- The qualification consists of six stages of fire, each designed to test different fundamental skills of handgun shooting.
- The minimum passing score is 70% on the D.P.S. handgun qualification course.
Objectives
- Demonstrate proficiency in shooting stages of fire that test the fundamentals of handgun shooting.
- Shoot a qualifying score of at least 70% on the D.P.S. qualification course.
Instruction
- The six stages of fire will be evaluated using a numerical value system (0-100%).
- The stages of fire do not have to be shot in numerical order, as long as all stages are fired.
- The P.O.S.T. rules require a minimum qualifying score of 70.00% on the D.P.S. handgun qualification course.
Stages of Fire
- Stage 1: Distance = 1 yard, handgun condition: Holstered, loaded with 6 rounds.
- Draw handgun, fire two rounds in 2 seconds, repeat 2 more times (6 rounds total).
- Stage 2: Distance = 3 yards, handgun condition: Holstered or held in strong hand.
- Drill 1: Strong-hand only, fire 3 rounds in 3 seconds, holster upon completion.
- Drill 2: Support-hand only, fire 2 shots in 3 seconds, holster upon completion.
- Stage 3: Distance = 5 yards, handgun condition: Holstered or held in strong hand.
- Drill 1: Support-hand only, fire 2 shots in 3 seconds, holster upon completion.
- Drill 2: Two-hand Support (Failure Drill), fire 3 rounds in 3 seconds, holster upon completion.
- Stage 4: Distance = 7 yards, handgun condition: Holstered.
- Two-hand Support (Failure Drill), fire 3 rounds in 4 seconds, holster upon completion.
- Stage 5: Distance = 15 yards, handgun condition: Holstered.
- Draw handgun, fire 6 rounds standing, perform a mandatory reload, fire 6 rounds kneeling, holster upon completion.
- Stage 6: Distance = 25 yards, handgun condition: Holstered.
- Draw handgun, fire 6 rounds from the right side of the barricade, perform a mandatory reload, fire 6 rounds from the left side of the barricade, holster upon completion.
Scoring
- The final score is determined by dividing scoring hits by 60 (total shots fired).
- 60 scoring hits would be graded as 100%, 42 hits would score as 70%, the minimum passing score.
- Scoring templates will be used to measure hits, with a scoring template for the head and a scoring template for the body.
