Study Notes
- In the time period 1450 to 1750, land-based Empires were expanding, and they were all characterized by their extensive territorial holdings.
- These Empires, also known as gunpowder Empires, were growing rapidly during this period.
- The main cause of their expansion was their militaristic use of gunpowder weapons.
- Four major land-based Empires emerged during this time: the Ottoman Empire, the Safavid Empire, the Mughal Empire, and the Ching Dynasty.
- The Ottoman Empire, founded in the 14th century, controlled a strategically important waterway, the Dardanelles, and used it to expand. They also developed and used gunpowder weapons extensively, leading to significant territorial gains.
- The Safavid Empire, established at the beginning of the 16th century, declared itself a Shia Muslim State, which put it in conflict with neighboring Sunni Muslim empires. They also expanded their military and adopted gunpowder weapons to extend their reach.
- The Mughal Empire, which replaced the Delhi Sultanate in the 16th century, expanded under the leadership of Babar and his grandson Akbar. They used a large military armed with gunpowder cannons and guns to conquer new territories.
- The Ching Dynasty, established by the Manchu people in 1636, took advantage of the fractured Ming Dynasty and invaded to set up their own Dynasty. They launched a 40-year campaign of conquest to claim all the former Ming territory.
- These Empires clashed with each other due to conflicting religious beliefs and political goals. For example, the Safavid-Mughal conflict was a series of wars fought between these two Muslim empires due to religious rivalry, and the Moroccan-Sonani conflict was caused by the Moroccan Kingdom's desire to control the trans-Saharan trade routes.
