- Parity refers to the number of live births a woman has had.
Gravidity and Parity Example
- If a woman has had 3 pregnancies, with 2 resulting in live births and 1 ending in stillbirth, her gravidity is 3 and parity is 2.
Naegele's Rule
- A method used to calculate the expected due date of a pregnancy based on the Last Menstrual Period (LMP).
- Expected due date is calculated by adding 9 months and 7 days to the LMP.
- Examples:
- LMP: May 15, 2022, expected due date: February 22, 2023
- LMP: September 10, 2021, expected due date: June 17, 2022
- LMP: January 5, 2023, expected due date: October 12, 2023
Pregnancy Signs
- Goodell sign: a softening of the cervix that occurs during pregnancy, usually felt around 6-8 weeks.
- Chadwick sign: a bluish discoloration of the vagina and cervix during pregnancy, caused by increased blood flow.
Fundal Height Measurement
- Measured from the top of the pubic bone to the top of the uterus.
- If the fundal height is at the umbilicus, the approximate gestational age of the fetus is 20-22 weeks.
Leopold Maneuvers
- A series of palpations used to determine fetal position and presentation during pregnancy.
- Typically used after 28-30 weeks of gestation to determine fetal position.
