- A small-sized nodule formation is a key feature of granuloma.
Types of Granulomata
- Infective granulomata: caused by bacteria, parasites, or fungi.
- Infective granulomata causes:
- Bacterial: Tuberculosis, Leprosy
- Parasitic: Schistosomiasis
- Fungal: Histoplasmosis, Blastomycosis
Foreign Body Granulomas
- Caused by the presence of foreign substances in the body.
- Types of foreign body granulomas:
- Endogenous: keratin, necrotic bone or adipose tissue, uric acid crystals
- Exogenous: wood, silica, asbestos, silicone, suture, talc powder
Granulomata of Unknown Cause
- Sarcoidosis is a type of granuloma of unknown cause.
Mechanism of Granuloma Formation
- Type IV cell-mediated delayed type hypersensitivity reaction is the mechanism of granuloma formation.
Tuberculosis Definition and Characteristics
- A chronic infective granulomatous disease caused by Mycobacterium tubercle bacilli.
