Pronouns

  • A pronoun is a word that replaces a noun.
  • Subject pronouns are used as the subject of a sentence.
  • Subject pronouns: I, you, he, she, it, we, they
  • Examples:
    • We swam in the pool for hours. (We = subject, swam = verb)
    • Maria baked cookies for her friends. (Maria = subject, baked = verb)

Possessive Nouns

  • Possessive nouns show ownership.
  • To make a noun possessive, add an apostrophe and an "s" to the end of the noun.
  • Examples:
    • The cat's toy is on the table.
    • I borrowed Mark's book from the library.
    • All of the hospital's nurses are on duty.

Identifying Sentences

  • A complete sentence has a subject and a verb.
  • A sentence fragment is a group of words that doesn't have a subject and a verb.
  • A run-on sentence is two or more complete sentences joined together without proper punctuation.

Review

  • "They’re" is the contraction for "they are". "There" is a place. "Their" shows possession.
  • "Too" means excessively. "Two" is the numeral for the number 2. "To" is used to connect a verb to its object.
  • "Through" means to pass from one side of something to another. "Threw" is the past tense of the verb "to throw." "Accept" means to receive. "Except" means to exclude.
  • When writing sentences, capitalize the first word in a sentence.
  • Use commas to separate words or phrases in a list.
