Study Notes
Gram-Negative Sepsis
- Also known as endotoxin shock, gram-negative sepsis is a serious condition caused by endotoxins
- Endotoxins, specifically lipopolysaccharides (LPS), are released from the outer membrane of gram-negative bacteria
- The presence of endotoxins in the bloodstream triggers a cascade of events that lead to a severe drop in blood pressure, known as septic shock
- This drop in blood pressure can be life-threatening, leading to organ failure and death
- Antibiotic treatment is often used to combat gram-negative bacterial infections, however, killing the bacteria can paradoxically worsen the condition by releasing more endotoxins
- Treatment strategies focus on neutralizing the LPS components and the inflammatory-causing cytokines that contribute to the detrimental effects of endotoxin shock
