Recreation
- Recreation is any activity that takes place during free time, does not follow standard rules, can be done anywhere, and gives enjoyment and self-satisfaction.
- The word "recreation" is derived from the Latin word "recreare", which means to be refreshed, to relax, or to enjoy.
Types of Recreational Activities
- Passive recreational activities require little exertion of effort or energy, but are generally sustained, e.g., watching television, listening to music, or reading books.
- Active recreational activities exert more energy and effort, e.g., jogging, swimming, hiking, biking, or gardening.
Classification of Recreation
- Spectator type: people spend their time watching the event and derive enjoyment from it.
- Participant type: people do not gain enjoyment merely by watching, they do so by joining the activity.
Aquatic Recreational Activities
- Aquatic recreational activities are excellent options for maintaining physical fitness, improving cardiorespiratory endurance, muscle strength, and bone strength.
- Aquatics include all sports activities in water, such as swimming, polo, diving, and synchronized swimming.
Swimming Strokes
- The Freestyle Stroke:
- The fastest stroke, where the head is forward and down, and propulsion is provided by the combination of legs and arms.
- The stroke requires coordination of legs, arms, head, and breathing.
- The Butterfly Stroke:
- The hardest stroke to execute, but the most fun to watch.
- Involves spreading arms out like wings above the water and paddling back under the water.
- Requires sufficient strength in the legs and upper body.
- The Breaststroke:
- One of the slowest moving swim techniques, but suitable for long-distance swims.
- Performed by pushing hands straight through the water and waving them back to the hips.
- Engages forearms, chest, and upper back more than any other swim style.
- The Backstroke:
- Popular for recreational swimmers who like to watch the sky.
- Involves laying on top of the water on your back and paddling backwards.
- Not as easy as it looks in competitive events, due to the risk of violating swim lanes and becoming entangled with lane markers.
