    • The Golgi apparatus (or Golgi complex) is a dynamic structure in plant cells, composed of stacks of flattened membrane sacs (cisternae), and a network of tubules and vesicles (trans Golgi network—TGN).
    • Each stack is called a Golgi body or dictyosome.
    • The Golgi apparatus has distinct regions:
      • The trans face is closest to the cell membrane.
      • The cis face is closest to the cell's center.
      • The medial cisternae are in between.
      • The trans Golgi network is part of the trans face.
    • Inter cisternal elements (protein crosslinks) stabilize the cisternae.
    • The Golgi plays a crucial role in producing and secreting complex polysaccharides (polymers of different sugars) and assembling the sugar chains (oligosaccharides) of glycoproteins.
    • In plants, the Golgi body is vital for cell wall formation.
    • Secretory vesicles, derived from the Golgi, carry the produced polysaccharides and glycoproteins to the plasma membrane.
    • These vesicles then fuse with the plasma membrane and release their contents into the cell wall.
    • Secretory vesicles can be smooth or have protein coats.
    • Vesicles from the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) are generally smooth.
    • Most vesicles from the Golgi have protein coats that assist vesicle formation.
