Computing Devices

• A tablet, or tablet PC, is a portable computer that uses a touchscreen as its primary input device.
• Most tablets are slightly smaller and weigh less than the average laptop.
• A netbook is a small laptop computer designed primarily for accessing internet-based applications.
• A smartphone is a mobile phone that performs many of the functions of a computer, typically having a touch screen interface, Internet access, and an operating system capable of running downloaded applications.
• Wearable technology, or wearable gadgets, include devices that can be worn by a consumer and often include tracking information related to health and fitness.

Philippine Writing Systems

• Baybayin was a pre-colonial writing style.
• During the colonial period, Filipinos who converted to Catholicism were taught the Spanish language and the Latin alphabet.
• In the 17th century, an alphabet was developed with 32 letters called abecedario.
• The Americans introduced the 26-letter alphabet to the Filipinos during their 40-year occupation.
• During the Philippine Commonwealth, the abecedario became abakada with 32 letters.
• In 1987, the current 28-letter Filipino alphabet was established as stated in the Constitution.

Media and Culture

• Media involves communication channels through which news, entertainment, education, data, or promotions are disseminated.
• Media is designed to reach the mass audience or the majority of the public.
• Examples of media include newspapers, television, magazines, radio, telephone, and internet.

Evolution of Media and Globalization

• The pre-historic age of media (before 1700’s) saw the development of petroglyphs, pictographs, and cave paintings.
• The 1940s to the 1970s saw the national language’s alphabet revised to 32 letters.
• In the 1980s, the 28-letter Filipino alphabet was established.
• The 1900s to the 2000s saw the introduction of television (1941), personal computers, and wearable technology.
• The internet paved the way for faster communication and the creation of social networks.

Culture

• Culture is a complex whole that includes knowledge, beliefs, arts, morals, customs, and other capabilities and habits acquired by man as a member of society.
• Culture is often referred to as the “way of life” or “design for living”.
• Culture includes many societal aspects such as attitudes, beliefs, language, customs, behavior, rituals, food, faith and religion, music, arts, and drama.

Characteristics of Culture

• Culture is everything, including material and non-material aspects.
• Culture is learned through enculturation, the process of learning one's own culture.
• Acculturation is the process of accommodating desirable traits from other cultures.
• Deculturation is the process of losing one's culture.
• Culture is shared among a group of people and is intergenerational.

Impact of Media on Culture

• The impact of media on culture includes national integration, increased awareness of social issues, promotion of a positive image of women, and increased employment opportunities.
• The negative impact of media on culture includes promoting popular culture, crime and violence, stereotypical image of women, and sensationalizing events.
