Glean: Lecture Note-Taking

Glean Overview

• Glean is a note-taking tool for lectures and meetings, accessible as a phone app with a subscription.
• A microphone is suggested when utilizing it for recording online and live lectures.

Organizing Content in Glean

• Folders (collections) organize content, preventing disorganization and over-reliance on search.
• To record, go to the desired collection and select "new event."
• Slides can be uploaded into Glean to match audio recordings for organization.
• Snapshots can be taken of whiteboards, blackboards, or online slides; uploading slides first enhances organization.
• Import slides by selecting "import slides" and choosing PowerPoint or PDF files for conversion into a portable document format.

Recording Options

• There are three recording options: in-person recordings for live lectures, or online content.
• The Glean notes app is compatible with Android and Apple devices for in-person recordings.
• For online content, record browser tab audio or use an external mic to record what is being said as well as the YouTube channel.
• Record the Chrome tab, entire window, or entire screen, making sure audio sharing is enabled.
• The cursor creates visual blocks during recording to indicate record activity for later content work.
• Slides are on the left, annotation options in the middle, and audio recording on the right.
• Captions can be displayed during recording by selecting the "CC" button.

Annotation Options

• Red button: Marks important information, adding a red circle and a note.
• Yellow button: User-defined, for review, unclear information, etc.
• Post Next Slide: Separates recorded slides
• Post Snapshot: Records images displayed online.
• Definition: Adds an image, definition, or relevant information to the recording
• Task button: Adds a task to a to-do list with a due date reminder.
• Squiggle option: Used for quick notes or drawings

Managing Recordings

• Pause recordings for group discussions or breaks; this is indicated visually in the recording.
• Maximize Glean to review organized information with corresponding audio.
• Clicking color indicators highlights the audio section from when the button was pressed until the enter key or black arrow is pressed.
• Pinpointing crucial information can be difficult if its importance isn't immediately apparent.

Editing

• Convert sections into main headings or tasks, or delete them individually or in groups, using the options within the boxes.
• Additional cards can be added beneath recordings to insert images, definitions, tasks, scribbles, or typed notes.

Post-Recording Options

• Audio, Transcript, and Outline are the post-recording options.
• Transcribe audio into text by selecting the correct language.
• Outline: Generates a quick outline with headings, useful for longer recordings like meetings or lectures.
• The transcribe option is used to highlight paragraphs and extract them into notes.
• Quiz Me: Assesses understanding with AI-generated quizzes using recorded content; more recording results in more comprehensive quizzes.

Reading View and Exporting

• Reading View compiles all added information into a single view.
• Content can be pasted into a Word document, including slides, information, and snapshots, for future use and organization.
