- Clarence Earl Gideon was arrested in 1961 and charged with breaking and entering in Panama City, Florida, after being caught stealing money from vending machines
- Gideon was denied an attorney by the judge, despite not being able to afford one, and was sentenced to 5 years in prison
- Gideon filed habeas corpus with the Florida Supreme Court arguing he was denied his right to legal representation
- The Florida Supreme Court denied Gideon's petition, but he then appealed to the United States Supreme Court
- The Supreme Court unanimously ruled in Gideon’s favor in 1963, stating that the 6th Amendment requires states to provide defense attorneys to those who cannot afford one when charged with a felony
- The court declared that Gideon’s conviction was unconstitutional because he was denied his right to legal assistance
The 6th, 7th, and 14th Amendments
