    Genkō Yōshi (Squared Paper) Rules

    • There are eleven rules when writing on squared paper
    • Rules apply to both vertical and horizontal writing
    • Write neatly so that the teacher/examiner can read your writing
    • The title goes on the first line, leaving the first 3-4 squares blank
    • The writer's name goes at the end of the second line
    • Start writing from the second square
    • Full stops and commas need one square each - they should be at the bottom left for horizontal writing, top right for vertical writing
    • Small や, ゆ, よ, and つ are written the same as the full stops and commas
    • Begin a new line for each dialogue. Leave one square blank
    • In dialogue, the full stop goes in the same square as the quotation mark
    • A new paragraph starts with one square blank
    • If a sentence ends at the end of the line, the full stop goes in the same square as the last character
    • This also applies to commas
    • If a quotation ends at the end of the line, the full stop goes in the same square as the last character
    • No spaces are to be left between words, but commas should be used like in English to make sentences understandable
    • Katakana vowel lengthening: In vertical writing, written as “I”, in horizontal, “ー”

    Applying for a job

    • Consider the audience, purpose, and context when writing anything
