Study Notes

Inequality between men and women is a widespread issue around the world known as gender inequality or unequal division of labor. However, there's also another concept called equality of genders, which refers to treating all people equally regardless of their sex, seeking equal rights and opportunities, regardless if they are female or male. In this sense, gender equity is achieved when both sexes have the same rights, accessibility to resources, and potential without any discrimination based on gender.

The importance of promoting gender equity has been recognized globally with various organizations like UN Women advocating for the implementation of policies to promote gender equity and equality across different sectors such as education, health, economy, finance, nutrition, etc.. Gender equity can be defined from two perspectives: one where individuals are treated differently because of their sex; the other where differences between the sexes are taken into account so that everyone receives what they need to live healthy lives.

In terms of social equity, it refers to how well society meets its citizens' essential needs by providing them with fair shares of public goods, services, income, wealth, power, and decision making. It focuses on ensuring everyone receives benefits according to their level of contribution in society while avoiding unnecessary inequalities, including those related to age, race, religion, national origin, disability, sexual orientation, and gender identity. Social equity emphasizes justice, inclusion, participation, and giving each person the opportunity to reach his or her full potential.

Given these definitions, achieving gender equity requires addressing issues such as wage gaps, family responsibilities, working conditions, care work, childcare, parenting, unpaid domestic work, violence against women, and the organization of workplaces. This means creating environments where children grow up free from prejudice regarding gender roles, values, attitudes, behaviors, and beliefs at home, in school, and in relationships. By doing so, we strive towards a more inclusive and just society where both males and females can thrive equally.
