Discrimination Today
- Discrimination is unfair treatment based on characteristics like race, gender, age, or sexual orientation.
- Race discrimination occurs when someone is treated differently due to their color, nationality, ethnic origin, or citizenship. Direct discrimination occurs when someone is treated worse than another person in a similar situation because of race. Indirect discrimination occurs when an organisation's policies disadvantage a racial group.
- Gender discrimination is treating someone less favorably due to their gender. This includes actions that deny opportunities or privileges based on gender, or consider gender in job or promotion decisions. Reverse discrimination is when gender is a factor in decisions about employment opportunities or benefits.
- Age discrimination is treating someone less favorably due to their age. It can be direct (treated worse than others due to age); indirect (organisation's policies disadvantage an age group), harassment, or victimization (treated badly for complaining about age discrimination).
- Sexual Orientation Discrimination happens when a person is treated less favorably than someone similar for their sexual orientation towards people of the same sex, different sex, or both.
- Gender Identity Discrimination occurs when someone is treated unfairly due to their gender-related identity, appearance, mannerisms, or other gender characteristics.
- Intersex status discrimination occurs when someone is treated less favorably due to physical, hormonal, or genetic features that are not wholly male or female.
Gender and Sexuality
-
Sex refers to biological and physiological differences between males and females.
-
Gender is socially learned behavior based on one's sex and how people perceive and relate to others based on perceived sex categories.
-
Sex is biological; gender is culturally defined.
-
SEX and gender are distinct concepts. Gender roles are societal norms for behavior based on perceived sex.
-
Gender Roles: Roles people typically play (socially defined) based on their sex, such as the roles of female as 'caring' or male as 'risk-taking'. They are often stereotypes and limit individuals.
-
Gender roles are socially learned and influence how people think, feel, and behave.
-
Gender Stereotypes are generalized views of traits or roles that should be possessed by men and women, based on their perceived sex..
-
Sexism is prejudice against a certain sex. It places males as the norm and those who do not conform or who are female are discriminated against.
-
Gender Equality: Recognition that all humans have equal rights and potential, free to fulfill human needs and contribute to society.
