Study Notes
Gastrointestinal Tract (Digestive System)
- Mouth Cavity:
- Mouth Cavity Proper: Surrounded by the gum and teeth
- Vestibule: Space between the cheeks/lips and the gum/teeth
- Mouth Content:
- Tongue: Essential for speech, swallowing, and taste/general sensation
- Teeth: Deciduous (baby teeth - 20) and Permanent (adult teeth - 32)
- Salivary Glands: Secrete saliva; Types include parotid, submandibular, and sublingual. Parotid is largest, sublingual is smallest
Pharynx
- 15 cm common pathway for air and food
- Connects mouth cavity to the esophagus via oropharyngeal isthmus
Esophagus
- 25 cm muscular tube to transport food from the pharynx to the stomach
Stomach
- Largest part of alimentary canal
- Located in the upper left abdomen
- J-shaped with cardiac and pyloric ends
- Consists of cardiac, fundus, body, and pyloric parts
- 6 meters long
Small Intestine
- Site: Central and lower abdomen
- Parts:
- Duodenum: Shortest, most fixed part (25 cm), C-shaped, receives pancreatic and bile ducts
- Jejunum: Middle part (2.5 meters) with wide lumen, highly vascular
- Ileum: Distal part (3.5 meters) with narrow lumen, less vascular
Large Intestine
- Length: 1.5 meters
- Site: Peripheral abdomen
- Character: Tenia coli (3 longitudinal bands), sacculation/haustration (segmental appearance)
- Parts: Cecum (widest), vermiform appendix (narrowest), ascending, transverse, descending, sigmoid colon, rectum, anal canal
Liver
- Largest gland in the body (approx. 1.5 kg)
- Location: Right upper abdomen
- Functions:
- Produces albumin
- Secretes bile (fat digestion)
- Synthesizes clotting factors
- Detoxifies metabolites (bilirubin, estrogen etc.)
Gall Bladder
- Pear-shaped sac
- Located on the inferior surface of the liver
- Stores and concentrates bile
Pancreas
- Lies transversely across the posterior abdominal wall
- Consists of head, neck, body, and tail
- Functions:
- Endocrine: Secretes insulin and glucagon to regulate blood glucose
- Exocrine: Secretes pancreatic enzymes via ducts entering the duodenum
