Digestive System Disorders: Gastritis
What is Gastritis?
Gastritis is an inflammation or irritation of the stomach lining, which can be acute (short-term) or chronic (long-term). It is a common condition, affecting about 8 in every 1,000 people in the U.S.. The condition can cause a burning or gnawing feeling in the stomach, usually between meals or at night. Gastritis is often a response from the immune system to something going on inside the stomach, such as infections, drug use, or other factors.
Types of Gastritis
Erosive Gastritis
This type leaves injuries or ulcers in the stomach lining, which can lead to complications such as peptic ulcers, gastrointestinal bleeding, and scarring.
Nonerosive Gastritis
This type does not cause ulcers but can still damage the stomach lining, leading to complications over time such as nutrient deficiencies and anemia.
Causes of Gastritis
There are several causes of gastritis, including:
- Infections: Bacterial infections, such as H. pylori, viral infections, parasite infections, and fungal infections can cause acute or chronic gastritis.
- Alcohol and Drugs: Overuse of alcohol, tobacco, or recreational drugs like cocaine can cause either acute or chronic gastritis.

Complications of Gastritis
Gastritis usually does not cause long-term problems, but when it damages the stomach lining, complications can result, such as:
- Peptic ulcers: These painful sores in the stomach lining can cause bleeding and scarring.
- Gastric outlet obstruction: Scar tissue from ulcers or long-term inflammation can partially or fully block the opening between the stomach and intestine, hindering digestion and causing pain, nausea, and vomiting.
- Gastrointestinal perforation: An ulcer can eventually turn into a hole in the wall of the stomach, leading to an infection in the abdominal cavity called peritonitis.
- Anemia: Iron-deficiency anemia could result from blood loss due to bleeding ulcers or due to continued irritation of the stomach.
- Atrophic gastritis: Even nonerosive gastritis can lead to complications over time, including nutrient deficiencies and anemia.
- Gastric intestinal metaplasia: A cellular change that is considered precancerous, raising the risk of developing stomach cancer.
Treatment of Gastritis
Treatment for gastritis depends on the type and cause. Treatment may include:
- Medications: To treat the underlying cause, such as antibiotics for bacterial infections or acid-reducing medications for acid reflux.
- Lifestyle changes: Avoiding aggravating factors like alcohol and NSAIDs, smoking cessation, and stress management.
- Surgery: In severe cases, such as gastric outlet obstruction or gastrointestinal perforation, surgery may be necessary.
