Gamete Production and Fertilization
- Haploidy is the key characteristic of gametes (sperm and eggs).
- Sperm, the male gamete, is produced in the testes.
- Eggs, also referred to as ova, are the female gametes and released by the ovaries.
- Fertilization occurs when the sperm and egg nuclei fuse, creating a zygote.
- The zygote divides and develops into an embryo, then a fetus, and ultimately a baby.
Male Reproductive Organs
- Testes: Produce sperm.
- Sperm Duct (Vas deferens): Carries sperm to the urethra.
- Seminal Vesicle: Produces fluid to nourish sperm and maintain the viscosity (thickness) of semen.
- Prostate Gland: Produces fluid to nourish sperm and maintain the viscosity of semen.
- Urethra: Carries semen and urine out of the body.
- Scrotum: Muscular sac that houses and regulates the temperature of the testes.
- Penis: Erectile tissue containing blood capillaries that can dilate or constrict, enabling erections.
Sperm Production
- Seminiferous Tubules: Tiny, coiled tubes within the testes where sperm are produced.
- Interstitial Cells: Cells located in the spaces between seminiferous tubules that produce testosterone.
- Testosterone plays a crucial role in male puberty and development, stimulating sperm production and secondary sexual characteristics.
Female Reproductive Organs
- Ovaries: Produce and release ova.
- Oviduct: Carries ova and is the site of fertilization.
- Uterus: Where the embryo/fetus grows.
- Endometrium: The lining of the uterus, where an embryo implants and a placenta forms; it thickens and sheds during the menstrual cycle.
- Cervix: The entrance to the uterus.
- Vagina: The site of copulation.
Ova Maturation
- Follicle: A small structure within the ovary where ova mature.
- Ovulation: The release of a mature ovum from the ovary, occurring once a month.
- Follicle Formation: A series of stages where an immature ovum grows and develops within the follicle, culminating in ovulation.
Ovulation
- A mature egg (ova) is released from the ovary into the oviduct.
- The follicle that released the egg becomes the corpus luteum.
- There is a small gap between the ovary and the oviduct, so the egg must travel a short distance to reach the oviduct.
- The oviduct walls contract to push the egg towards the uterus, similar to peristalsis.
Fertilization
- Fertilization occurs when the sperm and ova nuclei fuse together.
- Fertilization must occur in the oviduct before the egg reaches the uterus.
Reasons Fertilization May Fail
- Sperm may reach the egg too late.
- More than one sperm may enter the egg, causing it to die.
- The female immune system may kill the sperm in the uterus.
- Hormonal imbalances in females can prevent fertilization.
- Oviduct blockage can prevent the egg from reaching the uterus.
- Low sperm motility or deformed sperm may prevent fertilization.
Male and Female Gametes
- Male gamete: Sperm produced in the seminiferous tubules within the testes.
- Pathway (Fertilization): Sperm duct > vagina > cervix > uterus > oviduct
- Female gamete: Ova produced in a follicle within the ovary.
- Pathway (No fertilization): Ovary > oviduct > uterus > vagina
- Pathway (Fertilization): Ovary > oviduct > uterus > implantation in the endometrial layer
