Study Notes

Gamelan Music

  • Gamelan orchestras feature musicians of equal status.
  • The drummer sets the rhythm, but has no higher status than others.
  • Usually, men and women play in separate gamelan orchestras, but sometimes a woman sings with a male orchestra.
  • Instruments include drums (kendangs), metallophones (saron), and gongs (bonang).
  • Drums are the main rhythm instrument. There can be three or four different sized kendangs with different sized beads.
  • Metallophones have squared metal bars in a wooden frame, struck with felt-covered mallets. They create a softened sound for embellishment of the main tune.
  • Gongs called bonang add chiming sounds to the main theme. Either adding embellishment or to emphasize a point.
  • Different styles exist in Java and Bali, with the Balinese style being considered more energetic.
  • The Gong Ageng is a notable aspect often seen in the Balinese gamelan.
