Flashcards

Gait Cycle

The sequence of events from one foot contacting the ground to the same foot contacting the ground again.

Stance Phase

The phase of the gait cycle when the foot is in contact with the ground.

Swing Phase

The phase of the gait cycle when the foot is not in contact with the ground.

Double Support

The period in the gait cycle where both feet are in contact with the ground.

Gait Cycle Principles

  • Gait is the coordinated movement of body segments to propel the body through space
  • Lower extremities alternate, supporting and carrying the weight of the head, arms, and trunk
  • Body weight distribution: head/arms (25%), trunk (50%), each leg (10%)
  • Gait cycle involves periods of double-limb support (both legs) and single-limb support (one leg)
  • Body's center of mass is balanced over the supporting limb
  • Gait is described using one lower extremity as a reference, following its movements from initial contact to the next contact

Gait Cycle Phases

  • Gait Cycle : the time from when one extremity contacts the ground to the next time the same extremity contacts the ground
    • Includes stance and swing phases for each lower extremity.
  • Stance Phase: the period when the reference leg is in contact with the ground, lasting approximately 60% of the gait cycle; begins when the foot contacts the ground and continues until the same foot contacts the ground again.
  • Swing Phase: when the reference leg is not in contact with the ground: approximately 40% of the gait cycle, begins when the toes lift off the ground and ends right before the heel of the same leg touches the ground again.

Gait Cycle Subdivisions (Traditional vs. Ranchos Los Amigos)

  • Traditional Terminology: focuses on specific points in time during the gait cycle

  • Ranchos Los Amigos (RLA) Terminology: highlights intervals or phases of the activity for each interval within a stage.

  • Traditional Terminology (Stance Phase):

    • Heel Strike (HS) : beginning of stance phase
    • Foot Flat (FF) : sole of the foot touches the ground/floor
    • Midstance (MSt) : body is directly over the reference limb
    • Heel Off (HO) : heel leaves the ground
    • Toe Off (TO) : toes leave the ground
  • RLA Terminology (Stance Phase):

    • Initial Contact (IC)
    • Loading Response (LR)
    • Midstance (MSt)
    • Terminal Stance (TSt)
    • Preswing (PSw)
  • Traditional Terminology (Swing Phase):

    • Acceleration (Acc)
    • Midswing (MSw)
    • Deceleration (Dec)
  • RLA Terminology (Swing Phase):

    • Initial Swing (ISw)
    • Midswing (MSw)
    • Terminal Swing (TSw)
