  • Support the body structure and maintain posture.
  • Serve as storage sites for minerals and fats, crucial for metabolic functions.
  • Facilitate the formation of Red and White blood cells in the bone marrow.
  • Enable movement by serving as attachment points for skeletal muscles.

Axial & Appendicular Skeleton

  • Axial skeleton consists of the skull, vertebral column, and rib cage.
  • Appendicular skeleton includes limbs and their attachments to the axial skeleton.

Types of Bone

  • Long Bones: Provide leverage and movement; include femur, humerus, radius, ulna, tibia, fibula, metacarpals, metatarsals, phalanges, and clavicle.
  • Short Bones: Cube-shaped and provide stability; include carpals and tarsals.
  • Flat Bones: Provide protection and broad surfaces for muscle attachment; include ilium, ribs, sternum, scapulae, and cranium.
  • Irregular Bones: Have complex shapes; examples include vertebrae, sacrum, coccyx, and facial bones.
  • Sesamoid Bones: Include patella, embedded within tendons and assist with joint function.

Bones in the Hands & Feet
