Study Notes
Frontal Lobe
- Mainly concerned with control of movements
- Lies anterior to the central or rolandic sulcus
- Contains motor areas, including:
- Motor area (4): initiates voluntary motor activity of the opposite half of the body, located in the floor of the central sulcus
- Premotor area (6): shares the function of area 4, located in the anterior part of the precentral gyrus
- Other areas include:
- Motor speech center (Broca's area 44): responsible for speech, located in the middle part of the inferior frontal gyrus of the dominant hemisphere
- Writing center (Exner's area 45): located in the posterior part of the middle frontal gyrus
- Area 8 of voluntary conjugate eye movement: causes conjugate eye movements to the opposite side of stimulation, located in the posterior part of the middle frontal gyrus
- Prefrontal area: concerned with higher mental functions of memory, orientation, thinking, intelligence, and personality, occupies the anterior pole
Parietal Lobe
- Lies behind the central sulcus
- Mainly concerned with sensation
- Areas of particular importance include:
- Cortical sensory areas 1, 2, 3: concerned with perception of cortical sensations from the opposite half of the body, located in the posterior central gyrus
- Visual psychic area 39 of speech: concerned with recognition of written speech, located in the dominant hemisphere
