Study Notes
Precentral Gyrus
- Primary motor cortex
- Handles voluntary motor movement
- Located just anterior to the central sulcus
Postcentral Gyrus
- Primary somatosensory cortex
- Located just posterior to the central sulcus
- Mediates the detection of physical sensation
Parietal Lobes
- Located posterior to the frontal lobes
- Inferior border is the temporal lobe and the lateral fissure
- Functions include sensory detection, perception, and interpretation
Temporal Lobes
- Most inferior or caudal lobes
- Poorly defined posterior border, anterior occipital lobe
- Functions include audition (hearing), comprehension of language, and long-term memory
Occipital Lobes
- Most posterior lobes
- Responsible for the interpretation of visual stimuli from the optic pathways
Insula
- Portion of the cerebral cortex that lies deep in the lateral fissure
- Covered by the frontal, parietal, and temporal lobes
- Role in basic survival mechanisms such as taste (gustation), sensation of the viscera, and autonomic and homeostasis functions
- Functions in emotional processing, including empathy, self awareness, and emotional regulation
Frontal Lobes
- Borders are the lateral fissure and the central sulcus
- Mediate cognition (intelligence, problem solving, and short-term memory), expressive language, motor planning, mathematical calculations
- The prefrontal lobe mediates executive functions (organization, planning, sequencing, and motivation), self-insight, and regulation of emotions and working memory
- Development mostly after birth
- Not thought to be complete until late adolescence or early adulthood
