According to Freud, humor is a defense mechanism. We experience humor as a protection against something that arouses anxiety. In this article, they talk about how humor is used as a reaction to the emotional arousal that occurs when we are anxious or afraid about something and then that anxiety is suddenly released
Was this research study an experiment and how do you know?
It was an experiment because the researcher manipulated a variable while controlling everything else as much as possible. Another clue was that the subjects “were distributed randomly” into different groups – that shows the researcher was manipulating a different experience in those three groups.
