Study Notes

Sexual Development Across Life Stages

  • Sexual development is an ongoing process throughout life, as named by Freud.

Freud's Theory of Psychosexual Development

  • Freud's theory states that personality is established in the first years of life, and is challenging to alter after this period.
  • Parents need to guide their child's behavior appropriately at each stage for the child to overcome developmental tasks.
  • Freud divided psychosexual development into five stages occuring in age specific areas
  • These stages reflect the needs of the ID and are orderly
  • These stages cannot be separated, and each stage influences the following stage.

The Id, Ego, and Superego

  • The id, ego, and superego make up the different layers of the human mind.
  • Although close, each layer functions independently.
  • The id is the source of pleasure and basic energy.
  • Serving as the foundation, the id is selfish, primitive, and the source of basic needs, like hunger and sexuality.
  • The ego acts as the reality principle, mediating the id's desires.
  • Further, the ego uses defense mechanisms to achieve balance.
  • It balances the id and superego
  • The ego is linked to memory and helps with reality, defense, synthesis and intelligence.
  • The superego embodies social conscience and internalized norms.
  • Function: To resolve conflict, and keep tabs on the id.
  • The superego keeps taboos alive

Freud’s Psychosexual Stages

  • Oral Stage lasts from birth to 1.5 years, gratification centers on the mouth

  • The child interacts with the world primarily through the mouth.

  • The baby satisfies libido orally.

  • Satisfaction comes from the mouth, lips, and tongue, and later the teeth and jaw.

  • Developments such as communicating and toilet training occur during this stage.

  • A satisfied baby develops trust in the outside world.

  • Babies who form trusting relationships continue these types of relationships in later life.

  • First sexual stimulation occurs while bathing, and during diaper changes.

  • Movement of the diaper against genitals creates pleasurable sensations

  • Babies may explore and touch their genitals creating enjoyable sensation again.

  • Baby boys are naturally more attracted to and play with their penises, but it is less common for baby girls to play with their own clitoris.

  • All this is normal behavior.

  • If a baby has problems during this time will experience trust issues later on in adulthood

  • Anal Stage: 1.5 to 3 years, Satisfaction comes from controlling bowel movements.

  • Focus shifts from the mouth to the anus

  • Voluntary spinster muscle control enables children to move from passive to active

  • Anus is the focal point of pleasure

  • Children learn independence, as well as struggle for control with parents

  • They also learn pick/throw, hold/release.

  • They feel happy when they hold or do not releases faeces

  • The child determining whether to defecate or not

  • Controlling bowels and doing the will of others is very enjoyable and attracts attention

  • Children learn to understand concepts like good/bad, white/wrong, and shameful depending on how their potty training develops

  • Potty training style is import

  • Shouting, hitting, and punishing will now work

  • The child will try again but has a sense of guilt

  • This will teach them not to be shameful about sexuality, and help them communicate better when older.

  • Proper resolution yields autonomy and entrepreneurial spirit.

  • Fixation results from overly rigid parenting.

  • A mother is rigid and pressured attitude during toilet training can manifest as stubbornness or self-contempt when older/ and or very organised later in life

  • Phallic Stage: 3-6 years, Pleasure zone is the genitals; coping with incestuous sexual feelings

  • Children perceive and begin to understand the difference in the sexes at age 3.

  • Children start to ask and understand the different between boys and girls

  • Sex organs become of great interest at this time

  • Parents should refer to these parts by the correct terms so the child learns these facts correctly

  • The 5 most important rules during this period include:

    • A child believes what I think everyone can see
    • A child believes what the action is also the action
    • If a child only thinks about it then it means that they did it
    • If a child thinks about it then this means that they are guilty
    • A child is guilty, then this means that they will be punished
  • Important they feel like parents want to be with them

  • Latency Stage: (6-12 years old) Children withdraw from sexual pleasure Withdrawal from sexual pleasure

  • The oedipal complex resolves and sexual drive becomes inactive

  • This period combines sexuality and gender roles

  • Kids learn to control themselves and helps them grow

  • This phase is for learning and the child is directed to different aspects of life rather than sex

  • Genital Stage:

  • From age 12-18 years old, Children go through puberty and sexuality becomes more pronounces

  • The genitals become the focus of stimulation once again

  • Oedipus Complex and Electra Complex

  • Boys feel special connection with their mothers, like they can relate to them

  • Also the boy sees his father as a threat

  • The penis is very important for a child at this time, it symbolises who the child is

  • If the oedipal complex don’t go well they have unconscious fantasy such as sexual thoughts

  • How to fix this

    • If mom and dad love each other and express this out load make boy feel better
    • You need to make sure that there is a balance, and not get in the way
  • Must feel like you can detach from both parents • Not be too over bearing sexual life

  • Electra complex

  • A female child admires her father and shows jealousy towards her mother.

  • There can be intensified sexual and aggressive feelings

  • Daughter is too distance herself with the child not to be lost in those feelings

    • Anxiety
