Functions of Behavior

• Attention-seeking behavior involves seeking attention from others
• Access behavior involves trying to obtain a desired item or activity
• Escape/avoidance behavior involves trying to avoid or escape a situation or task

Functional Behavior Assessment

• Purpose: to identify the underlying reasons for problem behavior
• Key components: indirect assessment, direct observation, and functional analysis
• First step: indirect assessment (e.g., interviews, questionnaires, rating scales)

Functional Analysis

• Purpose: to identify the variables that contribute to problem behavior
• Conducted during a functional behavior assessment to identify the function of the problem behavior

Behavior Support Plan

• Final step: development of a behavior support plan, which outlines strategies to address the problem behavior

Differential Reinforcement

• Differential reinforcement of alternative behavior (DRA): reinforces a behavior that is an appropriate alternative to the problem behavior
• Differential reinforcement of incompatible behavior (DRI): reinforces a behavior that is physically impossible to do at the same time as the problem behavior
