Study Notes
- Max begrudgingly said goodbye on September 1, 2015
- Max's new school is called Ecole du Bonheur, or the School of Happiness.
First Day
- Max tried to calm his nerves by reminding himself had already completed sixth grade and it was still elementary school in Belgium
- He did not tell Kevin and Malik this, and they were too interested in discussing coding camp and a water gun battle.
- Navigating through the school, Max picked up some french words like "coucou" for "hi" and "l'été" for Summer
- He felt a detached, dreamlike feeling like he was in Washington.
- Max looked for the line for 6B when he got to the asphalt courtyard but couldn't find it.
- Madame Legrand was a tall, unsmiling blond woman who called him "Mex How-Weird".
- Max realized she was just pronouncing his name in a French accent.
- Max said "Yes" when she looked at him which felt stupid.
- She corrected him by replying "Oui, Madame".
- In class, Max was behind a girl named Farah and copied her as he didn't know the names for school supplies or the instructions.
- The school was old-fashioned with blackboards, chalk and desks that opened.
- Fountain pens are required and Max had to load a cartridge into his
- This made him feel like he traveled to a different century.
- Max's pen did not work when they were copying phrases from the blackboard.
- A sandy-haired kid mimed poking the top of the cartridge with the pen's nib.
- Max mouthed "Merci" and the boy grinned.
- When he tried again, ink poured all over the paper and his fingers.
- The sandy-haired kid chuckled and snorted.
- Max tried to blot the ink, staining everything.
- He raised his hand, Madame Legrand did not see him so he said "Excusez-moi" to get her attention.
- Max asked "Où est la toilette, Madame?" to which Madame Legrand responded at length in fast French.
- He asked again, and she said "Où sont les toilettes?" before finally telling him in perfect English that it was at the end of the hall.
Lunch and Recess disaster
- Lunch was not better; Max ate a plate of mystery soup and a plate of sausage, potatoes, and something purple lunch
- The bell rang before he could really dig in for lunch
- Max went to recess but because it was raining, he realized the School of Happiness did not cancel for bad weather.
- Max could see his townhouse and bedroom was less than fifty yards away from the spongy athletic court
- Some boys began to play soccer while others asked if he spoke English
- A red-haired boy knew some Walk the Moon lyrics
- English was all the boys knew
- Max tried to join the soccer game but slipped on the wet foam and the ball rolled out of bounds.
- The sandy-haired kid stared at him in disbelief; the kid ran towards the ball and knocked over a defender before kicking and hitting the ball.
- The ball hit Max in the face with such force that he was knocked backward.
- Regaining consciousness, all Max saw was raindrops and faces
- The boys asked "Ça va? Ça va?"
- Farah led Max to the secretary, then led him to a nook outside her office and had him lie down with a blanket and a cold pack.
- Max thought they might not even have a nurse's office before re-naming the school the School of Misery.
