Formation of Plural Nouns

• Most nouns become plural by adding -s to the singular form:
  • Cat -> Cats
  • Dog -> Dogs
• Nouns that end in -o, -is, -ch, or -sh add -es to form the plural:
  • Photo -> Photos
  • Crisis -> Crises
  • Witch -> Witches
• Nouns that end in a consonant + -y, change the -y to -ies to form the plural:
  • City -> Cities
  • Baby -> Babies
• Nouns that end in a vowel + -y, add -s to form the plural:
  • Day -> Days
  • Key -> Keys
• Irregular plurals:
  • Man -> Men
  • Woman -> Women
  • Foot -> Feet
  • Tooth -> Teeth

Special Cases

• Nouns that remain the same in both singular and plural forms:
  • Deer
  • Fish (but Fisheries is the plural form of Fish)
  • Series
• Nouns that have the same form but different pronunciations:
  • Bow (the front of a ship) -> Bows
  • Bow (a ribbon tied around a package) -> Bows
• Compound nouns:
  • Plural form depends on the type of compound noun:
    • Closed compound nouns (written as one word): add -s to the whole word
      • Bookshelf -> Bookshelves
    • Hyphenated compound nouns: add -s to the most important part
      • Self-portrait -> Self-portraits
    • Open compound nouns (written as separate words): add -s to the most important part
      • Post office -> Post offices

• La mayoría de los nombres se vuelven plurales agregando -s a la forma singular:
  • Gato -> GatOS
  • Perro -> PerroS
• Los nombres que terminan en -o, -is, -ch o -sh agregan -es para formar el plural:
  • Foto -> FotoS
  • Crisis -> CrisisES
  • Bruja -> BrujaS
• Los nombres que terminan en consonante + -y, cambian la -y por -ies para formar el plural:
  • Ciudad -> CiudadES
  • Bebé -> BebéS

• Nombres que tienen plurales irregulares:

Casos Especiales

• Nombres que se quedan iguales en singular y plural:
  • Ciervo
  • Pescado (pero la forma plural de Pescado es Pescaderías)
  • Serie
• Nombres que tienen la misma forma pero diferentes pronunciaciones:
  • Arco (la parte delantera de un barco) -> Arcos
  • Arco (una cinta atada alrededor de un paquete) -> Arcos
• Nombres compuestos:
  • La forma plural depende del tipo de nombre compuesto:
    • Nombres compuestos cerrados (escritos como una palabra): se agrega -s a la palabra completa
      • Estantería -> EstanteríaS
    • Nombres compuestos con guiones: se agrega -s a la parte más importante
      • Autorretrato -> AutorretratoS
    • Nombres compuestos abiertos (escritos como palabras separadas): se agrega -s a la parte más importante
