Football Laws and Rules
- Football originated in China, and Roman soldiers brought it to Britain.
- The English Football Association was formed in 1863.
- Football became very popular in the 19th century, and was the first team sport in the Olympic Games (1900 Paris).
- FIFA (Federation Internationale de Football Association) was founded in 1904. It organizes the World Football Championship and was involved in the Olympics 1900 and 1904.
- The All India Football Federation (AIFF) formed in 1937. India first participated in the Olympics in 1948 (London).
Field of Play
- The field of play is marked with lines, 5 inches (12 cm) wide.
- Touch lines: The two long boundary lines, 90-120 meters in length.
- Goal lines: The two shorter boundary lines, 45-90 meters in length.
- Halfway line: Divides the field into two halves (45-90 m length), 12cm wide
- Centre mark: Located at the middle of the halfway line.
- Centre circle: A 9.15 m radius circle from the center mark. Starts and restarts the game.
- Goal area: A specific area behind each goal post, 5.5 m from the inside of goalposts & extends into the field of 5.5m.
- Penalty area: 16.5m from each goalpost. Awarded penalty kicks for fouls. A penalty mark is 11m from the center of the goal.
- Penalty arc(outer circle): 9.15m or 10 yds from the penalty mark. Helps keep player distance.
- Corner arc (quarter circle): 1m radius from each corner flag post. Used in corner kicks.
- Goalposts: Located at the centre of each goal line.
- Crossbar: Connects the goal posts at the top.
Players and Equipment
- A match is played by two teams of a maximum of 11 players (including a goalkeeper).
- Players must wear jerseys, shorts, stockings and footwear appropriate for the game. Goalkeepers wear specific equipment(e.g., gloves).
- Players cannot wear equipment that is dangerous to themselves or other players.
Referee and Assistant Referees
- A referee controls the game, ensuring fair play and enforcing the rules.
- Referees have specific equipment and responsibilities for a match (e.g., clock, pens, cards).
- Assistant referees (linesmen) help the referee with certain aspects of the game (e.g., offside violations, out of play).
Duration of Match
- A match consists of two 45-minute halves with a 15-minute rest break.
- The total playing time is 90 minutes.
- Additional time (added time or extra time) could be added due to different situations(injuries, delays or fouls).
Substitutions
- Teams can make up to 3-5 substitutions per match.
- Substitutes must enter the field of play from the halfway line when a player exits the field.
Scoring
- A goal is scored when the entire ball crosses the goal line between the goal posts and underneath the crossbar.
- Own goals that are scored by a player on their own team are still counted as goals for an opposite team.
- If a match is tied, there are several possible ways to break the tie(e.g., sudden death, away goals or penalty kicks).
Offside Rule
- A player is in an offside position if he is closer to their opponent's goal line than the second last opponent when the ball is played.
- Players may not be in an offside position if they are in their defensive half or at the same level as the two defenders.
Free Kicks
- Direct free kicks can lead to goals directly.
- Indirect free kicks require the ball to touch another player before a goal is possible to be scored.
