Study Notes
- Most of the body's fluid is located inside cells, comprising about two-thirds of total body fluid.
- The extracellular fluid accounts for about one-third of the total body fluid.
- Potassium is the primary intracellular electrolyte.
- Sodium is the primary extracellular electrolyte and the most abundant cation.
- Intravascular fluid is the plasma, the liquid component of blood.
- Interstitial fluid is found in the spaces between cells, outside of blood vessels.
- Transcellular fluids include cerebrospinal, pleural, peritoneal, and synovial fluids.
- Filtration defines the fluid movement in and out of capillaries, between the vascular and interstitial compartments.
- Kidneys produce bicarbonate.
- Anions include bicarbonate, chloride (Cl-), and phosphate (PO-).
- Cations include sodium (Na+), potassium (K+), calcium (Ca++), and magnesium (Mg++).
- Factors that affect fluid balance include age, medications, acute and chronic illnesses, surgery, burns, and respiratory disorders.
- Osmolality measures the number of particles per kilogram of water.
- Hypernatremia defines dehydration due to sodium loss.
Mild Hypovolemia
- Weight loss
- Tachycardia, where the body attempts to circulate limited fluids efficiently
- Dark yellow urine
- Dry mucous membranes
- Flat neck veins
- Poor skin turgor
Severe Hypovolemia
- Oliguria (low urine output)
