Study Notes
Flashes and Floaters
- Flashes of light occur when the jelly inside the eye shrinks, tugging on the retina, causing light to appear at the edge of vision.
- Flashes are different from the visual disturbances experienced during a migraine.
Floaters
- Floaters appear as spots, lines, or cobweb effects, typically seen on plain surfaces like white walls or clear blue skies.
- They are usually caused by cells clumping together in the clear jelly of the eye, casting shadows on the retina.
- The sudden appearance of new floaters may indicate a tear in the retina, which is different from the normal, benign floaters.
When to Be Concerned
- Sudden appearance of a shower of new floaters, or floaters accompanied by flashes, a dark shadow, or a 'curtain' in vision, may indicate a retinal tear.
- If experiencing these symptoms, prompt attention is required; if unable to contact an optometrist, go to A&E or the eye casualty department immediately.
Retinal Detachment
- The retina is the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye, receiving images and sending them to the brain.
- If the retina tears, it may detach from the back of the eye, leading to partial or complete vision loss.
- A tear may be treated with a laser, increasing the chances of full recovery if treated promptly.
- If the retina has detached, surgery is required, but may not guarantee full recovery.
Monitoring Symptoms
- Look out for:
- Flashes or floaters getting worse.
- A black shadow in vision.
- A sudden cloud of spots.
- A curtain or veil over vision.
- Any change in vision.
- If symptoms have changed after seeing an optometrist, go to the eye casualty department or A&E immediately.
