Overview of Flagellates and Pathogenic Species
- Flagella are delicate, thread-like extensions used for locomotion in certain protozoa.
- Flagellates are classified into two types based on their habitat: intestinal/oral/genital and blood/tissue.
- Giardia lamblia/intestinalis is the only known pathogenic intestinal flagellate and was first described by Antonie van Leeuwenhoek.
- G. intestinalis has two stages: trophozoite, which is the motile and feeding stage, and cyst, which is the infective stage.
- G. intestinalis is transmitted through ingestion of infective cysts and can cause giardiasis, also known as "beaver fever".
- Trichomonas spp. are non-cyst forming flagellates and exist only in the trophozoite stage.
- T. vaginalis is the only pathogenic species of Trichomonas and is a sexually transmitted infection.
- T. vaginalis has a characteristic ovoid shape with four free anterior flagella and one undulating membrane supported by a costa.
- Trichomoniasis is the most prevalent non-viral sexually transmitted infection and can be transferred from a pregnant woman to her child during birth.
- Diagnostic methods for both Giardia and Trichomonas include stool exams, serological tests, and immunochromatography.
- Treatment for giardiasis is metronidazole, while treatment for trichomoniasis is metronidazole or an acidic douche.
- Reinfection with both Giardia and Trichomonas can occur quickly, and Trichomonas is more commonly found in women.
