    Five Themes of Geography

    • The Five Themes of Geography are Location, Place, Human-Environment Interaction, Movement, and Region.

    Location

    • Location is the position of a place on Earth.
    • Absolute Location is the exact location of a place on Earth, often expressed in latitude and longitude coordinates.
    • Relative Location describes a place's location in relation to other places.

    Place

    • Place describes the unique characteristics of a location.
    • This includes both physical features (such as mountains, rivers, and climate) and human characteristics (such as population, culture, and economic activities).
    • Physical Features are the natural aspects of the place, such as mountains, rivers, soil, and climate.
    • Human Features are the aspects of a place that are created by people. This can include buildings, roads, cultural landmarks, and economic activities.

    Human-Environment Interaction

    • Human-Environment Interaction describes the ways in which humans interact with their environment.
    • How humans adapt to their environment, such as building houses to protect themselves from the weather, or using technology to help them survive.
    • How humans modify, or change, their environment, such as building dams to control water flow, or cutting down trees to clear land for agriculture.

    Movement

    • Movement is the way people, goods, and ideas move across Earth's surface.
    • This may include transportation such as airplanes, trains, and cars, migration of people, or spread of ideas like religion or technology.

    Region

    • Region is an area of Earth that has one or more common features.
    • This can include common physical features such as climate, landforms, or vegetation, or common cultural features such as language, religion, or economic activities.
    • There are two types of regions: formal regions and functional regions.
    • Formal regions are defined by a shared characteristic, such as a political boundary like a state or country or a geographic feature like a mountain range.
    • Functional regions are defined by a shared purpose or function, such as a transportation network or a metropolitan area.
