First Aid for Eye, Ear, Nose, and Dental Injuries
- Hyphema, visible pool of blood in front of the iris, impaired vision, and eye pain, require immediate professional medical attention
- For hyphema, keep physical activity to a minimum, close both eyes and cover the affected eye with an eye patch, apply an eye shield, and seek professional medical care immediately
- Only disk batteries and live insects in the ear must be removed immediately, seek medical care for other ear injuries
- Do not use tweezers for objects stuck in the ear unless visible near the ear canal opening, seek medical care for removal
- For fluids coming from the ear, do not attempt to stop bleeding or CSF, place a sterile dressing over the ear, stabilize head and neck, and call 9-1-1
- Stabilize head and neck for protection in cases of accompanying head or neck injuries with nose injuries
- Most nosebleeds are self-limiting, broken nose may cause pain, swelling, bleeding, difficulty breathing, and black eyes; apply ice, do not try to straighten a crooked nose
- If bleeding from the nose has not stopped, have the person gently blow their nose and pinch nostrils shut again, seek other methods if bleeding continues
- After a nosebleed, avoid excessive physical activity, elevate head when lying down, keep nostrils moist, and avoid picking or rubbing the nose
- For a foreign object in the nose, have the person gently blow their nose while compressing the opposite nostril, seek medical care if the object cannot be removed
- If something is caught between the teeth, try to remove it with dental floss, seek dental care if unsuccessful
- For a bitten lip or tongue, apply direct pressure, clean the area, and seek medical care if bleeding does not stop
