Study Notes
- Geographic Designation: A system used to describe the orientation and exposure of buildings. Address side is labeled "A" and followed by "B", "C", and "D" in a clockwise manner. Used in strip malls or row houses when more than one exposure occupancy is affected.
- Firefighting: Firefighters may be assigned to work in groups. Groups are established to divide incidents into functional areas or operations. Located between Branches and Resources in the Operations Section.
- Hazardous Devices: Devices containing or suspected to contain substances that can cause an explosion or pose a fire threat. Hazardous materials that can explode or release extreme heat or fire.
- Haz-Mat Assignments: Haz-Mat Assignments are requested/dispatched when Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) incidents are reported. E-2, R-2, and HM-2 may be assigned for traffic control or additional absorbent.
- HAZMAT Operational Zones: HAZMAT incidents have three operational zones. Exclusion zone (hot zone) is the area with contamination and potential for exposure to hazardous substances. Contamination Reduction Zone (warm zone) is the area where responders enter and exit the exclusion zone for decontamination. Support zone (cold zone) is the area free from contamination.
- Immediately Dangerous to Life or Health (IDLH): An atmosphere that poses an immediate threat to life, causes irreversible adverse health effects, or impairs ability to escape.
- Incident Hot Zones: For non-HAZMAT incidents, the area with hazards requiring scene safety practices.
- Incident Action Plan (IAP): An oral or written plan containing overall strategy for managing an incident. It may include objectives, resources, and important information.
- Incident Command/Commander (IC): The individual responsible for all incident activities, including development of strategies and tactics, and ordering and releasing resources.
- Incident Command Post (ICP): The location where primary command functions are executed.
- Incident Command System (ICS): A combination of facilities, personnel, procedures, and communication operating within a common organizational structure for managing assigned resources.
- Incident Objectives: Specific, measurable, attainable, results oriented, and timely statements of guidance and direction for managing incident.
- Incident Safety Officer (ISO): Monitors and assesses safety hazards or unsafe situations; reports to Command.
- Initial Rapid Intervention Crew (IRIC): Two personnel who remain outside hazard area during initial stages; responsible for constant awareness of personnel in the hazard area, location, function, and time of entry.
- Inner Circle Survey: Function performed at a motor vehicle crash to determine number and condition of patients, hazards, vehicle stability, need for extrication, status of airbags, and if it is a hybrid vehicle.
- Ladder/Truck Company: Companies that perform aerial ladder functions, carry specialized forcible entry equipment, and provide Advanced Life Support.
- Landing Zone (LZ): A designated location for a helicopter to take off and land.
- Limited Access Highway: A roadway with restricted or limited entry and exit points.
- Lookout: A member tasked with paying attention to changing scene environments to provide warning and keep watch during times of civil disorder.
