A general guide only

What is the primary reason for using Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) in firefighting?

To protect the human respiratory system from injury

What should be assumed about any smoke and gases present at an incident?

They are hazardous to all humans, including victims, bystanders, and firefighters

When should an atmosphere be considered hazardous?

When any one of the following is present: high heat, smoke, toxic gases, oxygen deficiency, or suspected hazardous material release

What is a consequence of failure to use an SCBA in hazardous atmospheres?

Increased risk of exposure to inhaled poisons and toxic gases

What is a benefit of using an SCBA in firefighting?

It protects the user from inhaling dangerously high levels of heat

What should firefighters do if there is any doubt about whether an SCBA is required?

Always err on the side of safety

Why are modern buildings constructed with hazardous materials?

They release toxic chemicals as they burn

What is the primary goal of Standard Operating Procedures at all incidents?

To ensure the safety of firefighters and others

What is displayed on the secondary screen of the SCBA?

Temperature Gauge, Bluetooth Connectivity, Long Range Radio Icon, Battery Status, and Pressure

What is the purpose of the unit identifier on the SCBA?

To assist in quick visual identification

When should the SCBA be inspected?

Daily, after cleaning and disinfection

What is the color of the pressure status indicator when the pressure is between 36 - 49%?

Yellow

What is displayed on the user's right side of the HUD?

Pressure status

What is the purpose of the HUD pressure status indicators?

To provide the pressure and alarm status

What is the pressure range for Segment 1 of the HUD pressure status indicators?

75 - 100%

Why should the SCBA not be inspected before cleaning if there is danger of contacting hazardous contaminants?

To avoid risking the inspector's safety

What should be done if the SCBA fails any of the conditions listed in the Visual Inspection section or if the SCBA does not function properly for all tests outlined in the Functional Tests section?

The SCBA should be removed from service.

What should be inspected for deterioration, dirt, cracks, debris, tears, holes, stickiness, signs of heat or chemical related damage, or other visible signs of damage?

All components.

What should be checked on the facepiece rubber?

For a tight seal and secure fit to the lens ring.

What should be inspected on the exhalation valve?

That it is clean and operates easily.

What should be inspected on the regulator?

Moisture or debris inside the regulator and in the microphone ports.

What should be inspected on the quick connect hose?

Deterioration, dirt, cracks, tears, or tackiness.

What should be done to release the pressure reducer?

Turn the quick connect counterclockwise a quarter of a turn and pull away from the cylinder valve.

Why should the inhalation valve be inspected?

To ensure it is in place.

Study Notes

Hazards of Fighting Fires

  • The human respiratory system is sensitive and delicate, making it vulnerable to injury from smoke, gases, and other hazards.
  • Standard Operating Procedures require the use of Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) in hazardous atmospheres.

Hazardous Atmospheres

  • An atmosphere is considered hazardous if it contains:
    • High heat
    • Smoke
    • Toxic gases
    • Oxygen deficiency
    • Suspected hazardous material release
  • Modern buildings may release toxic chemicals when they burn, increasing the risk of inhalation hazards.

SCBA Components

  • Pressure reducer:
    • Incorporates an intermediate pressure relief valve
    • Has a cylinder connector with a sintered filter to capture particulates
    • Connects to the cylinder via a Quick Connect fitting
  • Power module:
    • Serves as the power supply and provides information for the control module, regulator, and speaker module
    • Connected to the backplate
    • Emits audible PASS alarms and pre-alarms
    • Has 4 buddy lights
    • Contains non-replaceable lithium-ion cells
    • Notifies the user when batteries need to be recharged
  • G1 Control Module:
    • The user's interface with the SCBA and PASS device
    • Assembled to the high-pressure air source and power module
    • Equipped with an analog gauge and graphical display
    • Provides vital information: time remain, cylinder pressure, battery status, and alarms

SCBA Operation

  • The PASS device performs a self-test during startup to ensure correct operation
  • The primary screen displays critical information, including calculated remaining service time
  • The secondary screen displays additional information, including temperature gauge, Bluetooth connectivity, and battery status
  • The HUD provides pressure and alarm status through light pipes into the facepiece

SCBA Inspection and Maintenance

  • The District requires daily inspection of SCBA as part of the daily check-off
  • Inspectors should check for:
    • Deterioration, dirt, cracks, debris, tears, holes, or other visible signs of damage
    • Functionality of all components
    • Facepiece inspection, including lens, rubber, and exhalation valve
    • Regulator inspection, including o-ring and seal ring
    • Pressure reducer inspection, including quick connect hose and fittings
  • SCBA that fail any inspection condition should be removed from service

This quiz covers the hazards associated with firefighting and all-hazards mitigation, including the importance of using Self-contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) to protect the respiratory system.
