Hoffman Estates Fire Department Internship Program
- The program is a collaboration between the Hoffman Estates Fire Department and Harper College Fire Science Program or Elgin Community College Program.
- The program allows Fire Science students to participate in a basic internship program within an actual fire department setting.
Eligibility and Application
- Students must be fully approved for the course by Harper College or Elgin Community College.
- The Fire Chief must also approve the student to participate in the internship with the Hoffman Estates Fire Department.
Program Requirements
- Applicants must comply with Hoffman Estates Fire Department guidelines, in addition to the Harper/Elgin Community College Fire Service Internship program requirements.
- An interview is required with the Battalion Chief Training/Safety and the Training Support Division Head to establish the candidate's acceptability for the program.
- Applicants must sign a waiver of liability and undergo vetting with HR (background check and drug screen).
Program Activities
- Interns will participate in basic shift activities in and around the fire station, but not in direct line firefighting, rescue, EMS, or other line functions.
- Interns will only participate as observers and will wear a vest marked "Observer" while responding to incidents.
Supervision and Mentoring
- Interns will answer to an assigned shift officer, usually a company officer with the rank of Fire Lieutenant or Captain.
- Interns will be assigned a primary mentoring firefighter and a secondary firefighter mentor in case the primary is absent or detailed elsewhere.
Shift and Dress Code
- Internship hours are limited to between 0800 hours and 2200 hours, with some flexibility for calls toned out prior to 2200 hours.
- A maximum of one internship student will be assigned per duty shift.
- Dress code includes a navy blue collared shirt with the Harper College Fire Science Logo or Navy Blue Polo if from Elgin Community College, matching navy blue slacks with a black belt, and hard-soled black shoes.
