Outside Training Guidelines
- The Hoffman Estates Fire Department has established guidelines for outside department training, including categorization, submission, and travel arrangements.
Training Categories
- Mandatory Training: Training opportunities that firefighters are required to attend, with duty time coverage and overtime pay for off-duty attendance. The Department pays for registration fees, lodging, meal reimbursement, and travel costs.
- Covered Training: Voluntary training opportunities with duty time coverage, no overtime pay, and potential reimbursement of registration fees, lodging, meal reimbursement, and travel costs based on available funds.
- Voluntary Training: Voluntary training opportunities with possible duty time coverage, no overtime pay, and potential reimbursement of registration fees, lodging, meal reimbursement, and travel costs based on available funds.
- Advanced Training: Training opportunities directly related to the fire service, resulting in a degree or certification not associated with the firefighter's level of responsibility or job performance, with no overtime pay.
Procedures
- The Battalion Chief-Training/Safety makes the final determination of training category.
- Firefighters must contact the shift commander to determine manpower and potential need for an EOD (exchange of duty) prior to the training class.
- Overtime is only approved for mandatory, covered, and voluntary classes.
Travel Arrangements
- A Department vehicle may be provided for transportation to mandatory, covered, and voluntary training classes.
- If a Department vehicle is not available, mileage will be paid according to Village travel policy for mandatory training, but not for covered and voluntary training.

- Mandatory Training: Includes Company Fire Officer classes, Advanced Fire Officer classes, First-In Officer Class, Technical Rescue Awareness, and more.
- Covered Training: Determined based on available funds in the current fiscal year Fire Department budget.

- Advanced Training: Includes Fire Science Associates Program, Fire Science Bachelors Program, Advanced Fire Officer classes, and more.
