Filipino History: An Overview

The history of the Philippines can be divided into several periods, each marked by significant events and cultural influences. This article will focus on the following subtopics: Pre-colonial era, Spanish colonization, and the rise of a republic.

Pre-colonial Era

The Philippine archipelago has been home to various kingdoms and thalassocracies since the 900s. During this time, Indian, Arab, Chinese, and Japanese merchants traded with the local kingdoms, which were mostly located by riverbanks, coastal ports, and central plains. The earliest known human activity in the archipelago dates back 709,000 years, with the discovery of Homo luzonensis, a species of archaic humans, on the island of Luzon.

The Philippine Islands were never colonized by Hinduism or Buddhism, unlike most of Southeast Asia. However, there were cultural influences from South Asia, such as a Sanskrit-based writing system, brought to the islands by the Indonesian empires of Srivijaya (7th–13th century) and Majapahit. The Filipino people's resistance to foreign influence can be traced back to this period, setting the stage for their eventual encounter with European colonizers.

Spanish Colonization

The Spanish city of Manila was founded in 1571, and by the end of the 16th century, most of the coastal and lowland areas from Luzon to northern Mindanao were under Spanish control. The Philippines was named after Philip II, king of Spain during the Spanish colonization of the islands in the 16th century. The Spanish colonization period was marked by the introduction of new technologies, such as western printing and the Gregorian calendar, as well as new food resources like maize, pineapple, and chocolate from Latin America.

The Spanish policies that accompanied this shift reinforced class distinctions in the society, with the principalia, or the heirs of pre-Spanish nobility, playing an important role in the political and economic landscape. The 19th century in the Philippines saw political and economic changes that would eventually lead to the country's independence.

Rise of a Republic

The Philippines became a republic in 1946, under different presidential successions, a favorable political, social, and economic climate was achieved. However, in the late 1960s, several political and social problems caused by ideological and ethnic differences beset the Marcos regime. The country's economic dynamism, rooted in strong consumer demand supported by a vibrant labor market, continued to grow throughout the years.

The Philippines has been one of the most dynamic economies in the East Asia and Pacific region, with a growing middle class and a large, young population. The country's economic recovery is well underway, as growth increased to 7.6 percent in 2022 from 5.7 percent in 2021. With continued recovery and reform efforts, the country is getting back on track on its way from a lower middle-income country to a more prosperous future.
