- Students should be able to identify the works of National Artists and appreciate their contributions to Philippine art and culture.
- Students should be able to recognize the value of the National Artists' award-winning works through painting, drawing, or performance.
What is the National Artists Award?
- The National Artists Award (NAA) is the highest national recognition given to Filipinos for their significant contributions to Philippine arts, including Music, Dance, Theater, Visual Arts, Literature, Film, Broadcast Arts, and Architecture.
- The award is given mutually by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), and by the President of the Philippines based on their suggestions.
- The award has a similar honor to the GAMABA and the National Scientist Award.
- The award was created in 1972 under Presidential Decree No. 1001 by President Ferdinand Marcos.
- The first artist to be honored was Fernando Amorsolo after his death.
- Currently, there are 66 awardees from seven disciplines. These include engineering, structure, film, visual arts, writing, music, and theater.
Criteria for National Artists

The National Artist of the Philippines selected based on broad criteria set by the Cultural Center of the Philippines and the National Commission on Culture and the Arts.

Specific National Artists and Their Works
- Pablo S. Antonio (Architecture): Major works include Far Eastern University Administration and Science buildings; Manila Polo Club; Ideal Theater; Lyric Theater; Galaxy Theater; Capitan Luis Gonzaga Building; Boulevard-Alhambra (now Bel-Air apartments); Ramon Roces Publications Building (now Guzman Institute of Electronics).
- Leandro V. Locsin (Architecture): Reshaped the urban landscape with distinctive architecture. Important work is the Istana Nurul Iman (palace of the Sultan of Brunei) and the CCP Complex.
- Juan F. Nakpil (Architecture): A pioneer and innovator in Philippine architecture. His major works include the Geronimo de los Reyes Building, Magsaysay Building, Rizal Theater, Capitol Theater, Captain Pepe Building, Manila Jockey Club, Rufino Building, Philippine Village Hotel, University of the Philippines Administration and University Library, and the reconstructed Rizal House in Calamba.
- Ildefonso P. Santos, Jr. (Architecture): Pioneered the practice of landscape architecture in the Philippines. Many notable works are parks, plazas, gardens, and outdoor settings. Examples include Makati Commercial Center in Manila, Paco Park, Tagaytay Highland Resort, Mt. Malarayat Golf and Country Club, and Orchard Golf.
- Francisco T. Mañosa (Architecture and Allied Arts): Designed the Filipino Sulo Hotel, as well as other creations which used unique Filipino forms
- Lamberto V. Avellana (Theater and Film): First filmmaker to introduce the motion picture camera point-of-view and was called "The Boy Wonder of Philippine Movies". Known for his films such as Sakay, Anak Dalita, and Badjao.
- Lino Brocka (Film and Broadcast Arts): Espoused the term "freedom of expression" in the Philippine Constitution. He created a large body of works highlighting the lives and struggles of marginalized groups such as slum dwellers, prostitutes and construction workers.
- Ishmael Bernal (Cinema): Hailing as a "genius of film", he has produced some of the most notable films including "Pahiram ng Isang Umaga", "Broken Marriage", "Himala", "City After Dark", and "Nanal sa Tubig".
- Fernando Poe, Jr. (Cinema): A cultural icon with a large impact on audiences, known for films such as Apollo Robles, Batang Maynila, Mga Alabok Sa Lupa, Ako Ang Katarungan, Tatak ng Alipin, Totoy Bato, Asedillo, Partida, and Ang Probisyano.

- Abdulmari Asia Imao (Visual Arts): A sculptor, painter, photographer, ceramist, documentary filmmaker, cultural researcher, writer, articulated Philippine Muslim art and culture. His works popularized indigenous motifs like ukkil, sarimanok, and naga.
- Guillermo Tolentino (Sculpture): a product of the Revival period in Philippine art, with works like "The Bonifacio Monument".
- Lauro "Larry" Alcala (Visual Arts): A cartoonist who produced iconic works, such as "Slice of Life."
