- Fibroadenoma is a benign tumor of fibrous and epithelial elements in the breast.
- It is the most common benign tumor of the female breast.
- It can occur at any age during reproductive life, but most patients are between 15 to 30 years of age.
- Clinically, it appears as a solitary, discrete, freely mobile nodule within the breast.
- Rarely, it may contain in situ or invasive lobular or ductal carcinoma.
- Grossly, it is a small, well-encapsulated, spherical or discoid mass.
- Microscopically, it comprises mostly fibrous tissue and can show two types of patterns: intracanalicular and peri-canalicular.
- Variants include tubular adenoma, lactating adenoma, and juvenile fibroadenoma.
- Fibroadenoma may be part of fibrocystic disease and is termed fibroadenomatosis.
- Giant fibroadenoma lacks the histologic features of cyst sarcoma phyllodes.
