FFA Degree Program Overview
- FFA awards degrees to recognize members for progress in leadership, skills, and occupational development.
- There are five degrees that an FFA member can obtain.
Chapter Level Degrees
- Degrees Awarded: Discovery Degree, Greenhand Degree, Chapter FFA Degree.
State Level Degrees
- State FFA Degree: Awarded by State Associations to top members.
National Level Degrees
- American FFA Degree: Highest award given nationally to elite FFA members.
Discovery Degree Requirements
- Enrollment in agriculture class (grades 7-8).
- Payment of local, state, and national membership dues.
- Participation in at least one local FFA chapter activity.
- Knowledge of agricultural careers and entrepreneurial opportunities.
- Familiarity with local chapter’s Program of Activities.
- Submission of a written application.
Greenhand Degree Requirements
- Enrollment in Ag education with a satisfactory SAE program plan.
- Ability to explain the FFA Creed, Motto, Salute, and Mission Statement.
- Understanding the FFA emblem and colors.
- Knowledge of the organization’s history and chapter constitution.
- Access to the Official FFA Manual and Student Handbook.
- Submission of a written application.
Chapter Degree Requirements
- Must have received the Greenhand Degree.
- Completion of at least 180 hours of systematic instruction at or above the ninth grade level.
- Participation in planning and conducting three official chapter functions.
- Earnings of at least $150 through member’s own efforts or equivalent work.
- Leading a group discussion for 15 minutes and demonstrating five procedures of parliamentary law.
- Progress toward individual achievement in award programs.
- Satisfactory scholastic record and participation in 10 hours of community service.
- Submission of a written application.
State Degree Requirements
- Must have received the Chapter FFA Degree and been an active member for at least two years.
- Completion of at least 360 hours of agricultural instruction.
- Earnings of at least $1,000 or equivalent work.
- Demonstration of leadership through parliamentary law, speeches, and participation in chapter committees.
- Satisfactory scholastic record and involvement in the chapter's Program of Activities.
- Participation in five FFA activities above the chapter level and 25 hours of community service.
American Degree Requirements
- Must have received the State FFA Degree and been an active member for the past three years.
- Completion of at least 540 hours of agricultural instruction.
- Graduation from high school at least 12 months prior to the national convention.
- Proven outstanding SAE program with comprehensive planning and financial expertise.
- Earnings of at least $10,000 or substantial investment in agricultural activities.
- Demonstration of leadership abilities, community involvement, and a high school record of "C" or better.
- Participation in at least 50 hours of community service and submission of a comprehensive application with necessary signatures.
Honorary American FFA Degree
- Awarded to individuals who provide outstanding service to agricultural education and FFA.
- Teacher nominees require a minimum of 10 years teaching experience and at least 85% FFA membership in their program.
