The Tokugawa Shogunate
- Brought peace to Japan, known as the Great Peace, a long period of stability
- Ruled Japan from 1603 to 1868, with Tokugawa Ieyasu as the first shogun
Social and Economic Changes
- Japan transformed from a rural to an urban society by the mid-1700s
- Edo grew into one of the largest cities in the world, with a population of over 1 million by the early 1800s
- Trade increased, merchants grew rich, and the economy helped Japanese culture to advance
Foreign Policy
- By the 1630s, Japan closed its doors to the rest of the world, except for one port at Nagasaki
- For over 200 years, Japan developed as a self-sufficient country, with no European colonies
Feudal System
- Emperor held the top position in the government, but had no real power
- Shogun, or supreme military commander, held real power, with the Tokugawa shogunate ruling Japan
- Daimyo, great warrior lords, governed at the local level, depending on samurai, who fought for them
- Tokugawa shoguns created a strong central government, controlling Japan, known as centralized feudalism
