The First Mass and Encounter with the Natives
- Magellan ordered his interpreter, Enrique, to ask the natives if they could gather and hear mass on the island.
- Pigafetta described the natives as heathens who wore tattoos, gold earrings, and gold teeth, and practiced nudity with minimal clothing.
- The women wore tree cloth from their waist down and had long black hair that reached the ground.
The Cross and Celebration
- A cross was planted in the island as a symbol of protection against calamities, a sign of friendship, and a reminder to thank the Lord.
