Overview
The female reproductive system is a complex biological system that enables women to produce gametes (egg cells), support a developing fetus, and give birth.
External Genitalia
- Vulva: the external female genital area, including the labia, clitoris, and opening of the vagina
- Labia: folds of skin that surround the opening of the vagina
- Clitoris: a small, sensitive organ that is highly erogenous
- Perineum: the area between the vagina and anus
Internal Reproductive Organs
- Vagina: a muscular, elastic tube that connects the external genitalia to the cervix
- Cervix: the lower, narrow part of the uterus that opens into the vagina
- Uterus: a hollow, muscular organ that supports fetal development during pregnancy
- Fallopian tubes: narrow tubes that connect the uterus to the ovaries
- Ovaries: organs that produce and store egg cells (oocytes)
Ovarian Cycle
- Oogenesis: the process of egg cell production and maturation
- Follicular phase: the phase of the ovarian cycle where follicles mature and release an egg cell
- Luteal phase: the phase of the ovarian cycle where the empty follicle produces progesterone to prepare the uterus for implantation
Menstrual Cycle
- Menstruation: the shedding of the uterine lining (endometrium) that occurs if pregnancy does not occur
-
Phases of the menstrual cycle:
- Menstruation (days 1-5)
- Follicular phase (days 1-14)
- Ovulation (day 14)
- Luteal phase (days 15-28)
Hormonal Regulation
- Estrogen: a hormone produced by the ovaries that regulates the growth and development of the female reproductive system
- Progesterone: a hormone produced by the ovaries that prepares the uterus for implantation and maintains pregnancy
- Hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis: the regulatory system that controls the ovarian cycle and hormone production
