Leaf Structure and Function
- Leaves have an outer layer called the epidermis, often transparent and covered in a waxy cuticle. This cuticle helps prevent water loss.
- Stomata are tiny openings on the leaf surface, allowing gas exchange. Guard cells control the size of these openings.
- Guard cells regulate the size of the stomata's opening, thus controlling water loss. They open and close to manage water loss.
- Water vapor exits the leaf through the stomata in a process called transpiration.
