Study Notes
ADS-B Overview
- ADS-B stands for Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast.
- Provides real-time information on aircraft position, speed, and intent.
ADS-B Equipment Requirements
- Aircraft must have ADS-B Out equipment installed when operating in Class E airspace above 10,000' MSL.
- For operations at 12,000' MSL, ADS-B Out is mandatory.
- ADS-B is not required below 10,000' MSL in Class E airspace.
Specific Airspace Requirements
- In Class E airspace at and above 3,000' MSL over the Gulf of Mexico and extending 12 nautical miles from the coastline, ADS-B is required.
- To operate within the Mode C veil (30 NM of a Class B airport from the surface up to 10,000' MSL), ADS-B Out is necessary.
Class B Airspace Regulations
- ADS-B Out is required for operations within 30 NM of a Class B airport.
- No ADS-B Out is needed when flying under the Class B airspace shelf unless within the Mode C veil.
- ADS-B is mandatory when overflying Class C airspace below 10,000' MSL if within ceiling and lateral boundaries.
Class D and C Airspace Regulations
- No ADS-B Out is required in Class D airspace or when flying under the shelf of Class C airspace.
Optional Features
- While ADS-B Out is required, ADS-B In is optional and not mandated for flight operations.
