Study Notes
Overview of the Skull
- The skull is divided into two main sections: Neurocranium (cranial bones) and Viscerocranium (facial bones).
- The facial skeleton consists of 14 bones essential for protection, sensory functions, and structural support.
Functions of the Facial Skeleton
- Protects the brain and houses sensory organs for smell, sight, and taste.
- Provides a framework for soft tissues, facilitating eating, facial expressions, breathing, and speech.
- The structure and form of the face are influenced by the facial skeleton.
Facial Bones
- Total of 14 facial bones:
- Vomer (1)
- Palatine Bones (2)
- Conchae (2)
- Zygomatic Bones (2)
- Lacrimal Bones (2)
- Nasal Bones (2)
- Maxilla (2)
- Mandible (1)
Nasal Bones
- Two slender, oblong bones that form the bridge of the nose.
- Articulate with the other nasal bone, frontal bone, maxilla, and ethmoid.
Inferior Nasal Concha
- Located within the nasal cavity, increases inspired air contact with cavity walls through enhanced surface area.
- Articulates with the ethmoid, maxilla, and lacrimal bones.
Vomer Bone
- A singular, thin bone that vertically divides the nasal cavity into left and right sides.
- Articulates with the maxilla, ethmoid, sphenoid bones, and palatine.
Lacrimal Bones
- The smallest bones of the face, forming part of the medial wall of the orbit.
- Support the eyes and are involved in the drainage of tears through the tear duct.
- Articulate with frontal, ethmoid, maxilla, and inferior nasal concha.
Maxilla Bones
- Form the upper jaw, holding the upper teeth and contributing to the sides of the nasal cavity and eye socket.
- Articulate with zygomatic, frontal, and palatine bones.
Zygomatic Bones
- Diamond-shaped, forming the cheekbones and important for mastication.
- Provide an attachment for the masseter muscle; articulate with the sphenoid, maxilla, frontal, and temporal bones.
Mandible Bone
- The largest bone in the skull, forming the lower jaw and housing the lower teeth.
- Composed of the mandible body and ramus; articulates with the temporal bone at the temporomandibular joint (TMJ).
Palatine Bones
- Located at the back of the nasal cavity, contributing to the nasal cavity, eye socket, and hard palate.
- Articulate with several bones: sphenoid, ethmoid, maxilla, inferior nasal concha, vomer, and the opposite palatine.
- Includes the greater and lesser palatine foramina for transmitting nerves and blood vessels.
